Prominent motoring journalist Dean Evans has taken another tarmac rally win for Hankook Tyres, securing class victory in the recent Targa High Country rally in Victoria.
The Sydneysider and co-driver Matthew Harriott won all 16 stages of the Showroom 4WD classification in their Mitsubishi EVO X RS, beating their nearest rival by four minutes and 44 seconds.
They also finished fifth overall amongst a field of 135 competitors.
Evans said his Hankook Ventus TD semi-slick tyres played a key role in beating his chief challenger by such a large margin.
“From the shortest six kilometre Mirimbah stage to the 31 kilometre Eildon stage, the Hankooks had superb grip from start to finish,” Evans said.
“We set our hot pressures after stage one and after that, we just added fuel. We swapped front to rear tyres overnight, as everyone does, and still had enough rubber at the end to do a few more stages.
“I’ve driven on a lot of different brands and I’ve always been immensely impressed by the Hankooks ? this result just confirms it.”
Evans said the latest triumph, in the wake of a fourth placed outright finish at the legendary Targa Tasmania in April, also demonstrated the Hankook Ventus TD’s versatility.
“We’ve noticed the Hankooks are even more durable across a wider range of conditions, from the five degree temperatures of Tasmania to the 30 degree heat of Victoria,” he said.
Evans and Harriott will next compete at the Targa Wrest Point in February, where they will run a wider version of the Ventus tyre.
“Though we have been running the 235/40R18 Ventus TD Z221, we’ve proven that the slightly narrower tyre is not a hindrance to the Evo X’s performance,” Evans added.
“We are looking forward to running the new 245/40R18 at Targa Wrest Point.”
